APTUK UK-Wide Post-Registration Career Pathway for Pharmacy Technicians

Help Shape the Future of Pharmacy Technician Career Development

APTUK is pleased to launch consultation on the draft UK-Wide Pharmacy Technician Career Pathway.

Developed in collaboration with the Partner Engagement Group and pharmacy stakeholders from across the UK, the pathway aims to provide a clear, nationally recognised approach to pharmacy technician career development from Foundation Practice (Level 4) to Enhanced Practice (Level 6), aligned to the Skills for Health Career Framework.

We are now seeking feedback to help refine the pathway before publication.

Why a Career Pathway

The pathway aims to:

  • Support workforce development and career progression
  • Promote consistency across sectors and settings
  • Support transferability of skills and experience
  • Support career development conversations
  • Align pharmacy technician development with wider healthcare priorities.

The pathway is organised around the four pillars of multi-professional practice:

Clinical Practice Supporting safe, effective and person-centred use of medicines.

Leadership and Management Developing leadership capability, workforce development and service improvement.

Research Supporting evidence-based practice, quality improvement, patient safety and service evaluation.

Education Supporting learning, workforce development and a positive learning culture.

What Happens Next?

  • Develop implementation resources and guidance.
  • Inform possible future work relating Advanced and Consultant pharmacy technician Practice.

We anticipate publication of:

  • Consultation report: Early 2027
  • Final pathway: Spring 2027
